Ways to Ask for that Raise
Self-worth drives career success and empowers you to reach your ultimate professional goals. Never settle for a salary that fails to reflect your work ethic or career aspirations.
Consider these four strategies when asking for a raise:
- Good timing – Ensure your company can comfortably afford to offer a raise. If your organization is missing its sales quotas, hold off on your request. Similarly, asking for a pay increase just two months into a new role is far too early. Timing is everything.
- Ask after a big accomplishment – Capitalize on your momentum. If you recently closed a major sale or secured a significant deal, leverage that success. Request a raise while your value remains top of mind for leadership.
- Ask in person – Schedule a face-to-face conversation. While you can send an email to request the meeting, hold the actual salary discussion in person. Ask your manager for dedicated time—perhaps over lunch—to review your compensation.
- Rehearse! – Prepare your pitch in advance. Clearly explain why you deserve a higher salary. Did you recently pitch an innovative project or take on extra responsibilities? Highlight these concrete contributions during your conversation.
What not to say:
- “I deserve this raise.”
- “I need the money.”
- “My co-worker is making more than me.”
- “If I don’t get a raise, I quit.”
Remember, if you stay silent, you will not receive the compensation you deserve. Speak up, project confidence, and dress for success.
