Assistant Controller Full Time

The Position: Assistant Controller

This position can be located in Morris County, NJ, or in Manhattan. Hybrid work schedule requiring working on-site 2 days per week.

In addition to the listed base salary range, this position is eligible for a $15,000 – $30,000 annual bonus.

Client is part of an insurance holding group, which stands among the global top ten property-casualty insurance groups.

Responsibilities:

• Hire, train, and supervise the staff within the Investment Accounting department.




• Manage the relationship with Clearwater and vendor interactions will fall under your purview.




• Oversee investment reporting in the General Ledger and Clearwater systems. This includes reviewing journal entries and investment reconciliations based on both STAT and GAAP guidelines.




• Prepare materials for Investment Committee Meetings, attend these meetings, and document the minutes of each session.




• Calculate and process investment manager fees.




• You will extend support to the Finance Department as needed.




• Assist in the preparation of statutory-based financial statements for insurance companies, regulatory reporting across 50 states and with the NAIC. Review financial statements, analytical reports, reconciliations, and checklists to ensure accuracy. Keep abreast of regulatory changes and evaluate their impact on financials.




• Assist in quarterly financial statement preparation following GAAP and IFRS standards for all North America companies. Analyze individual company and consolidated results before CFO review and coordinating activities to report consolidated financial results to the Head Office.




• Review and document the control environment with the Controller and oversee the development and maintenance of financial reporting controls. Keep current documentation for key functions within the Finance Department. Support the Controller in planning and executing the Financial Division’s self-audits.




• Interact with external auditors, actuaries, insurance examiners, and tax authorities. Coordinate external audits and ensure timely responses to requests, as well as assist in resolving findings and issues. Escalate significant matters to Senior Management.




• Special projects may be assigned to include but not limited to implementing new ledger systems, refining existing departmental systems, and developing data solutions for reporting. This could also involve establishing a new work paper file system.




• You will contribute to centralizing the accounting function in the U.S., devising processes for other U.S. affiliates including the creation of processes and related accounting policies for future acquisitions.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

• In your supervisory capacity, you will manage a team of three employees in the Accounting Department. Your supervisory duties will align with organizational policies and applicable laws, encompassing tasks such as interviewing, hiring, training, assigning work, evaluating performance, rewarding, disciplining, and addressing concerns.

Education and/or Experience:

• Bachelors Degree in Accounting is a prerequisite.




• CPA certification is desirable.




• Public Accounting experience




• P&C experience.
