Tips for working from home, for the uninitiated
Work from home jobs are increasing by the day due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Some of us have worked from home before and already understand how to stay on top of tasks. However, some of us are also used to the office and structure of going to work. Here are a few tips to help you remain effective and get the job done at home.
- Get dressed – If you’re wearing lounge clothes all day, then you’ll be in a lounge mood all day. Get dressed for the day including shoes. This will put you in a ready-to-go mood and give you more energy to get things done.
- Set scheduled break times – Having set break times gives you a little bit of the structure your missing from your normal work settings. It also gives you an opportunity to plan your workday around these times. If you find yourself losing focus while working from home, it may just be time for you to step away for a little break to get back on track.
- Have a dedicated work space – Your company may have supplied you with a computer or laptop to complete your work at home. But just because your laptop is portable, doesn’t mean you should be working from your couch, the bed, other locations that could deter you from completing your work. You should have a stationary place in your home where you conduct all work activities.
- Stay accessible – Be in regular contact with your team so they know you’re actually working. Your online presence is important to employers who are already worried about the production levels of their business. Whatever method your company communicates in a normal work setting is how you should maintain communication while working from home.
